Short Biography

Barnabás  Bosshart was born in 1947 in Herisau/AR Switzerland and lives in Maranhão, Brazil. After completing his studies in Photography at the Photoklasse of the Kunstgewerbeschule Zurich (1963/67) he was assisting American Fashion-Star-Photographer Bill King in London, New York City and Paris (1967/68) and afterwards was himself a free-lance fashion-photographer in Chelsea/London for e.g. Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Vanity Fair, The Times etc. till 1975. From 1973/2007 he travelled through almost all continents as a reportage-photographer, with a focal point on Brazil.

His most important black & white projects are in the field of Documentary-Reportage about day-to-day Life-Events of the people of Alcântara/MA Brazil (1981/88),  South West China, Macão, Shanghai and Beijing (1989), Rio de Janeiro (1991/93), The Canton Thurgau/Switzerland (1997/98) and from 1999 to 2007 about the northeastern state of Maranhão in Brazil, including a reportage about the Canela-Apanyekra.

Bosshart’s work has been shown since 1985 in over 20 personal exhibitions in renowned museums worldwide e.g. in Switzerland, Germany, Portugal, China and Brazil.

Book and exhibition-catalogue-publications include e.g.: “Blimey! Another Book About London”(1972); “Alcântara, eine brasilianische Stadt, zwischen kolonialer Erinnerung und Raketenträumen” (1989); “Points of Time” (1989);  “La Cina in due Tempi”  (1993); “Nord-Nordost” (1998); "Barnabàs Bosshart Brasilienbilder - Drei Welten 1980 - 2005 (2007).

His black and white fine prints are included in various collections as the Musée de l'Elysée, Lausanne, Switzerland; The Swiss Foundation for Photography, Winterthur, Switzerland;
